Ron DeSantis is an American politician and former U.S. Representative for Florida’s 6th congressional district. He is a member of the Republican Party. In December 2017, he announced his candidacy for Governor of Florida in the 2018 election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DeSantis was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on September 14, 1978, to Karen (n\u00e9e Rogers) and Ron DeSantis. His father is of Italian descent and his mother is of Irish descent. He was raised in Dunedin, Florida, where he attended Dunedin High School. He graduated from Yale University in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He then attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After graduating from law school, DeSantis served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Martin Reid Wiener of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He then served as an Associate Counsel for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary. In 2007, he deployed to Iraq as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. After his return from Iraq, he served as a prosecutor in the Navy JAG Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DeSantis was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, defeating Democrat Jon Runyan. He was re-elected in 2014 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the House, DeSantis served on the Judiciary and Oversight & Government Reform Committees. He was a member of the House Freedom Caucus. He was also a co-founder and the chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In December 2017, DeSantis announced his candidacy for Governor of Florida in the 2018 election. He resigned from his position in the House of Representatives on January 5, 2018, in order to focus on his gubernatorial campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
DeSantis ran on a platform of supporting President Donald Trump and opposing illegal immigration. He also supports gun rights and is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the Republican primary, DeSantis defeated Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam. In the general election, he defeated Democrat Andrew Gillum. He was sworn in as Governor of Florida on January 8, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
